TitleHeart showing polyarteritis nodosa
DescriptionSPECIMEN AND HISTOLOGICAL GLASS SLIDE X3
Clinical history:
From a male aged 44 who developed a rash, chest infection and anorexia 3 months before his death. These cleared but were followed by severe abdominal pain flitting to various parts of the abdomen and by development of severe hypertension accompanied by retinal changes, and by microscopic haematuria. Hypotensive drugs and steroids were given but he developed a fatal Gram-ve septicaemia.
Description of specimen:
Heart - Infarction (Polyarteritis). Coronary artery - aneurysm (polyarteritis). The patient suffered from myocardial infarction as a result of involvement of major coronary arteries by polyarteritis nodosa. The septal endocardium is discoloured as the result of this infarction and the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery at about its midpoint shows a segment of aneurysmal swelling and discolouration as the result of polyarteritic damage.
