DescriptionColon, Portion of a, laid open longitudinally, showing schi stosomiasi s.
From an adult male in Egypt
The mucosa is studded with discrete, sessile, brownish nodules averaging some 5 mm. in diameter. Several have a warty appearance on the surface. Microscopic re-examination shows the ova of schistosoma mansonii with the characteristic lateral spines. Some of the ova are calcified and surrounded by foreign-body giant-cells and some contain the schistosoma embryo. The small papillomata projecting into the lumen of the intestine are the result of inflammatory-cell reaction of the tissues to the presence of the ova.
