DescriptionUterus. Anterior half of a coronal section of a cervix and, showing fibromyomata.
From an adult.
The cervix is distended by a well defined, circular tumour, without definite capsule and showing centrally some necrosis. A small polypus depends from the external orifice of the uterus. A much smaller but similar nodule occupies the muscular wall of the uterine fundus and impinges on the uterine cavity. Microscopic examination shows the tumour in the fundus to be an intramural fibromyoma with hyaline degeneration, some necrosis and small cyst formation, and around the cysts early sarcomatous change. The cervical tumour has the structure of a necrotic fibromyoma and in places the cervix shows inflammatory infiltration.
