DescriptionUterus in vertical section with the uterine tubes and ovaries, showing tuberculosis.
From a nullipara aged 56 in whom the menopause had occurred fifteen years ago and who had experienced loss of strength and weight which during a year had incapacitated her for work an a domestic servant. During two years she had had cough with scanty sputum and for the past fortnight some vaginal discharge. Vaginal examination showed wartiness of the cervix extending to the posterior vaginal wall. Curettage of the endometrium showed many tuberculous foci.
The uterus is small and section shows the uterine cavity narrow, rough and of yellow tissue which with a somewhat branched arrangement extends into the myometrium. A few yellow nodules lie close to the surface of the cervix. The lumen of each uterine tube is obliterated and on section presents a few yellow tubercles. The ovaries are small and atrophied. Microscopic examination shows the endometrium for the most part replaced by caseous tuberculous tissue and there are few glandular elements even in the cervical portion. There is almost complete fibrosis of the uterine tubes which are blocked and permeated by tubercle-follicles. The ovaries are not affected but so fibrous that hardly any ovarian tissue remains.
