Numerous thin-walled diverticula project between hypertophied muscle bands. The feacal contents were cleared and replaced with formalin before the colon was sectioned.
The deiverticula may become inflamed - diverticulitis - and the inflamed diverticula may perforate or bleed. Prolongued diverticular disease may cause obstruction and may simulate carcinoma.
