DescriptionTongue, pharynx and oesophagus demonstrating a pharyngeal pouch. The oesophagus has been opened up posteriorly and along the right post-olateral margin of the pharynx. The pouch projects towards the left.
The aperture of the pouch lies opposite the level of the lower border of the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage and is directed upwards.
The pouch itself is loosely attached to the oesophagus on the medial side to the connective tissue, but the line of separation would appear to he easily definable. The structure of the wall of the pouch is not shown. The size of the pouch is approximately 2” x 1½” x 1½”. The mucosa of the pharynx is slightly congested.
The inferior constrictor muscle has been dissected and the line of cleavage between the cricoid and thyroid segments defined. (Red glass rod). The inferior aspect of the neck of the pouch lies above the cricoid segment. (Cricopharyngeus muscle).
