Small intestine, congenital diverticulum of the ileum

Object numberGC.5294
TitleSmall intestine, congenital diverticulum of the ileum
DescriptionDry specimen in a glass jar.
Portion of small intestine, showing a congenital diverticulum of the ileum. Removed by operation on account of strangulation of the diverticulum by the remains of the omphalomesenteric duct which as a fibrous cord had retained its connexion with the umbilicus.
A little way from its origin the diverticulum is slightly constricted and thence it dilates to form a club-shaped extremity from the margin of which depends part of the fibrous cord which caused strangulation. The fibrous cord is white and necrotic-looking and an irregular, sloughy ring marks the serosa of the diverticulum at the site of constriction. Congestion of the small intestine and recent fibrin on its surface are remains of the obstruction and peritonitis.
