DescriptionFour fishing trophies from the RCSEd annual angling competition, established in 1994 in memory of fellow and former museum conservator Ian Kirkland, including:
The Ian Kirkland Fishing Trophy
This beautifully detailed bronze cast of a brown trout was modelled in plaster by Ian Greenset and
designed and made by Adrian Hope. It was commissioned by Mrs Noel Kirkland, widow of Ian.
The trophy has been fished for annually since 1994.
Ian Kirkland (1919-1993) was a pupil at Morrison's Academy in Perthshire before going to Edinburgh
University where he graduated in medicine in 1942. After graduation, he served in the Royal Air Force
in India and Burma and latterly as Medical Officer to survivors of the Battle of Arnhem.
He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1948 and specialised in paediatric surgery,
working at the Western General and Leith Hospitals in Edinburgh. At the peak of his career he was invited to
India to advise on the development of paediatric surgery in the northern part of that copuntry.
He was a life-long supporter of the College and, on his retiral in 1984, he became Conservator of the Museum, a post he held until 1990.
He was a natural athlete, playing rugby and golf at a high level and he was an enthusiastic curler and fisherman. (Masson- College Miscellany)
