Chondroma of the thumb
Object numberGC.3358
TitleChondroma of the thumb
DescriptionChondroma of the thumb, requiring amputation
The preparation is half of a sagittal section of a right thumb and its metacarpal
From a male aged 51 years. The growth was of seven years duration and was alleged to have followed an injury. (A cast of the hand can be seen at GC.3357). Stiffness and discomfort was at first ascribed to rheumatism and the swelling which followed though it gradually increased was said to vary. Later the surface became blue and soft and eighteen months before amputation the tumour had been incised without benefit.
The tumour arises from the palmar aspect of the body of the proximal phalanx and its superficial surface is irregular and lobular. On section the tumour shows a lobulated structure with an indefinite stroma but a well formed capsule. Some calcareous deposit appears in portions of the stroma and towards the margins some haemorrhages have occurred and the tissues are soft and fleshy.
On microscopic examination the tumour has the characters of a chondroma with some myxomatous degeneration and appearances of malignancy.
