TitleStomach showing Carcinoma
Creator William James (1873-1959) Stuart
DescriptionSpecimen and Histological Glass Slide x1A portion of the stomach showing a scirrhous, ulcerating carcinoma.
From a female aged 38 years who had suffered from pain in the left side of the abdomen for six weeks, and from malaise and “sickness” for eight weeks.
There is a large carcinoma of the stomach, involving approximately 7 cm of the smaller curvature, and an even greater extent of the greater curvature. The submucous coat is extensively infiltrated and occupied by a thick, white, scirrhous layer of malignant tissue. The muscular coat is invaded, and bossy outgrowths are visible under the peritoneum. On the greater curvature the growth has invaded the gastrocolic omentum where it forms a massive nodule. The surface of the growth presents a large ulcer, with indurated base and raised edges. The ulcer, even where it is deepest, does not extend through the muscular coat and does not appear to have preceded the carcinoma; it is a cancerous ulcer, not an “ulcer-cancer.” Microscopically the growth is an adenocarcinoma.
