TitleStomach showing hypertrophic gastritis
Creator D. McIntosh
DescriptionSpecimen and Histological Glass Slide x9
Portion of stomach removed by sleeve resection, showing hypertrophic gastritis which is a condition where excess mucus is produced in the stomach as a result of overgrowth of the stomach lining.
Externally the serosa is thickened but through this the undulating and lobulated arrangement of the underlying tissues can be observed. The mucosa of the stomach shows gross hypertrophy. It is arranged in a series of intertwining convoluted folds, with deep intervening sulci. The grosser folds are in turn covered by a mucosal pattern of small folds and sulci. The surface has a velvet appearance and mucus remains adherent in considerable amounts.
There is no evidence of ulceration or inflammatory change. The changes noted involve the whole specimen but are less marked along the greater curvature and in the antral regions.
An extreme degree of hypertrophic gastritis. The dilated glands, filled with mucus, form scattered small cysts in the plicated folds of the mucosa. There is a generalised inflammatory cell infiltration, both acute and chronic. There is no evidence of neoplasia.
