TitleThe distal portion of an adult right femur, showing a gunshot fracture
DescriptionThe distal portion of an adult right femur, showing a gunshot fracture. From a soldier wounded at Waterloo (1815) by a musket ball, who was amputated on around four weeks after receiving this injury.
A considerable amount of bone is absent. The entire margin of the proximal fragment is smooth white and necrosed and is being delineated from the living bone by a sulcus. Anteriorly the necrotic area measures 38mm vertically.
On the neighbouring diaphysis a few irregular patches of limited new bone formation are scattered over the surface. The distal fragment shows slight rarefaction and two fissures, one through the medial and one partly through the lateral condyle, cross the articular surface.
