TitleLung showing empyema
DescriptionSpecimen of lung showing an empyema, the cause of which is a subpleural abscess at the apex of the lower lobe, with areas of consolidation and haemorrhage. The rest of the lung is free from disease.
From a male aged 52 years. The patient had a history of peptic ulceration extending over a period of 20 years. Two years prior to death on 21.10.58 he developed a neuropathy which was a complication of a previously
unrecognised diabetes mellitus. He then became subject to an increasing retinopathy.
He was treated in February, 1958 for a myocardial infarction with pulmonary embolism and cardiac failure — from this illness he made a good recovery. He then was treated by radioactive yttrium implants in the pituitary without improvement. Five days prior to death he was admitted to hospital in severe hypotension of unknown origin for this he was given intravenous S. hydrocortisone and noradrenalin. Shortly before death he had a severe gastric haemorrhage.
