Femur showing septic popliteal periostitis
Object numberGC.2404-1
TitleFemur showing septic popliteal periostitis
DescriptionFemur showing septic popliteal periostitis
The preparation is the distal half of an adult left femur.
"From the Crimea, taken from the bottom of the great shaft."
The bone is heavy and section shows increased density and thickness of the compact bone. Anteriorly there is slight roughening ofthe surface of the diaphysis and a similar roughening is present to a greater degree of the medial and lateral surfaces. The popliteal surface is very rough and irregular and is thickened from new bone formation. Close to the intercondylic fossa a portion of the surface is hollowed out and rarefied. The gross changes are limited to the popliteal surface and are doubtless septic in origin, and the less gross changes on the neighbouring surfaces are the result of chronic hyperaemia.
