TitleOesophagus showing Adenocarcinoma
DescriptionSpecimen and Histological Glass Slide x2
Oesophagus showing an adenocarcinoma, from a female aged 60 years.
The patient had a 12 year history of dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing), vomiting and nausea. There was found to be a hiatus hernia, which is when part of the stomach squeezes up into the chest through an opening ("hiatus") in the diaphragm. During examination the oesophagus was perforated and immediate resection undertaken.
The specimen shows lower end of the oesophagus and resected upper end of the stomach. At the lower end of the oesophagus there is an encircling carcinoma which extends from the cardia upwards for 5 cm. No penetration to the exterior of the oesophagus is noted. Just distal to the carcinoma the oesophagus has been perforated.
