TitleTumour of the Parotid Gland
DescriptionParotid gland. Tumour of
From a woman aged 65 who first noticed a small swelling in front of the left ear sixteen years before seeking advice During the first ten years growth was slow and painless. Thereafter the tumour increased in size more quickly and at times was painful. When admitted to hospital there was a large tumour extending from the left sygomatic arch on the left side to well below the mandible and from near the angle of the mouth backward to the mastoid process (vide photograph). The skin was thin and taut over the tumour and showed dilated venules. Parts of the tumour felt soft. There was no tenderness and no evidence of damage to the facial nerve. The tumour was removed with a portion of skin after ligating the external carotid artery. There was a well defined capsule which rendered enucleation easy. Following the operation, however, there was a complete left facial palsy. The capsule was intact and no enlarged glands could be detected, but to reduce the risk of recurrence radiation was carried out by means of radium implants to the area.
