Object numberGC.1292
TitleA “mixed” tumour (pleomorphic adenoma) of the parotid salivary gland
DescriptionA “mixed” tumour (pleomorphic adenoma) of the parotid salivary gland
The preparation is the left ear, with some of the adjacent skin, where the tumour can be seen
Removed post mortem from an adult female in whom removal of the original tumour (10.(5).b.12.) some three years previously was followed by local recurrence which necessitated removal at intervals of nine months, three months (10(5).b.13.), four months (10.(5).b.14.) and again three months (10.(5).b.15 - now discarded) later. She survived the last recurrence more than a year.
The tumour consists of massive lobules in continuity, covered with a thin capsule through which in many places the tumour substance has erupted. It extends from the auricula, the lower half of which it embraces and had reached the clavicle. On microscopic examination, extensive necrosis obscures much of the structure, which was epithelial with a tendency to acinar formation embedded in large alveoli of a superabundant fibrous stroma.
