DescriptionSalivary gland, Half of a longitudinal section of a left submandibular, showing sialolithiasis.
From a male aged 75 from whose right submandibular salivary duct after sublingual incision a small concretion had been expressed three years previously. Recently swelling and discomfort on the left side had obtained and radiography showed (10.(5).h.l8.) a concretion in the left submandibular gland which was then excised.
The salivary gland is piriform, 40 mm. in its long diameter and on section shows a mass of calculous material surrounded by a 10 mm. cortex of fibrous glandular parenchyma. Microscopic examination shows atrophy of the glandular elements with fibrosis and numerous inflammatory foci.
