Skull with deposits from a retinoblastoma

Object numberGC.15245
TitleSkull with deposits from a retinoblastoma
DescriptionThe vault of skull of a 2 year old boy, showing secondary deposits from retinoblastoma.
This is a rare malignant tumour of the retina, in this case involving both eyes, with metastatic deposits throughout the child's bones, liver, lymph glands, meninges and spinal cord.
The specimen shows a mass of soft reddish tumour projects anteriorly in the frontal regions. In the inner surface, haemorrhagic tumour tissue can be seen growing along the suture lines and eroding the bones, giving it a curious worm-eaten appearance. Deposits of tumour are also present on the outer surface, especially along the sutures.
