DescriptionNatural electrical impulses cause the heart to beat. When these impulses are distrubed medical intervention is necessary. A Pacemaker is a name for a device that stimulates the heart. The device consists of a pulse generator which is implated in the chest and one or two pacing leads tipped by electrodes which are inserted into the heart to stimulate the contraction of the heart muscles. The generator creates the electrical pacing signal transmitted to the heart, this is powered by a battery.
This model is made by Vitatron Medical Dieren, in Holland. The company implanted their first pacemaker in 1962. This device is in a solid metal case presumably holding the battery with a yellow resin top showing the inner workings of the device. There is no clear entry point for the pacing lead but one corner does look like it previously opened. The word Vitalith C 2121 and VVI (which stands for Ventrical Inhibited, Ventricular sensed, Inhibited response) are visible underthe makers name. This pacemaker's mode paces only the ventricle of the heart, senses electrical activity in the ventricle, and inhibits pacing when it detects natural heartbeats. Presumably this is a lithiam battery operated device.
