The device consists of a pulse generator which is implated in the chest and one or two pacing leads tipped by electrodes which are inserted into the heart to stimulate the contraction of the heart muscles. The generator creates the electrical pacing signal transmitted to the heart, this is powered by a battery.
This Model 3821 cardiac pacemaker was made by Devices Limited England. It was powered by four mercury-zinc batteries. Designed in the 1970s it is considerably larger than those designed today. There are no pacing leads with this device.
