Amputating Knife
Object numberED.CS.2026.16
TitleAmputating Knife
CreatorAuguste Lebeuf (Manufacturer)
DescriptionAmputating knife with shear type handles. The main blade is fairly straight with a curved pointed tip. At the top of the main blade is a smaller blade with a shear type cutter which is operated by squeezing the handles. These are unlocked via a latch at the end of the handles. The original box is present but is in very poor condition and completely broken. The lid reads 'Auguste Lebeuf, fabricant a Nogent-en-Bassigny, Haute-Marne, Maisons a nogent-contrexeville vighy.'
Possibly a unique piece commissioned from a master cutler, as the Nogent Haute Marne region was an established and highly reputable manufacturing region with over 6,000 cutlers by the end of the nineteenth century. The smaller 'shear' section may have been for the amputation of small appendages like fingers or toes, while the larger blade used for leg or arm amputations.
