TitleBeaded Serbian Cigarette Holder
DescriptionBeaded Serbian cigarette holder collected by Vera 'Jack' Holme of the Scottish Women's Hospital. The cigarette holder is decorated with multicoloured beads in coloured sections and contains an original label used by the Scottish Women's Hospital which reads 'Jugoslav Exhibition, Cigraette holder from Montenegro - Lent by V.L Holme (45). This was used alongside other Serbian artefacts at lectures on the SWH activities and the humanitarian effort in Serbia during WW1. These lectures were used to fundraise for the Scottish Women's Hospital and their continued efforts during the war.
Holme was serving with the SWH in Serbia when the central powers invaded and refused to evacuate in order to stay with the patients. She returned to the UK in 1917 to report on the situation of the Serbian army on the Romanian Front to Lord Robert Cecil of the Foreign Office and then conducted tours to raise funds for the SWH. She returned to Serbia after the war and established and ran an orphanage from 1919-1922.
