TitleA German Instruments case from WW2 belonging to James J Mason Brown
DescriptionIn 1942 James Mason Brown was serving in the Royal Army medical Corps in North Africa. At this stage in the war the Germans were ignoring the Red Cross emblems and bombing field hospitals. When his field hospital was ordered to remove the Red Cross emblems to avoid being targeted by the Luftwaffe, the hospital was promptly bombed by the Italians. One Italian who was shot down in the raid was dismayed to find he was targeting a hospital but understood when told why they were not displaying their Red Crosses. Having lost all their equipment a plea went out on the radio and very soon they were up and running again. One donated item was this complete set of German surgeon’s instruments. Mason Brown used them for the rest of the war and even carried on using some of them on his return to Scotland.
