CreatorCambridge Instrument Co. Ltd. (Manufacturer)
DescriptionLarge wooden box with leather handle at top. Lid opens to reveal black and white cable inside lid, connected to main machine inside base of box. The inside of the lid has a small compartment which contains various slots for other equipment - slots are empty except for one reel of recording paper. The empty space within the box lid accommodates the protruding section of the machine, which has an angled window to recording paper and an ink stylus. On top of this is a plaque which reads 'Cambridge Electrite Cardiograph, Cambridge Instrument Co. LTD, London and Cambridge'. To the right of this is a flat panel with various control dials and 'condensed instructions' for use.
Early machines were large and difficult to use. Patients had to soak their limbs in salt solution before an ECG (electrocardiogram) could be taken. ‘Direct-writing’ machines such as this one devised by the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company in 1908 made monitoring and analysing heart rhythms much simpler.
