Scope and ContentAlmost since their foundation in 1831 and 1803 respectively, the Chair of Systematic Surgery and the Regius Chair of Clinical Surgery in Edinburgh University have been occupied by a remarkable series of illustrious Professors.
For a period of 10 years in the middle of the 20th century, these two Chairs were held by one man and his assumption at the invitation of the University of this dual responsibility bears eloquent witness to his academic and professional distinction.
James Rognvald Learmonth, born in Gatehouse of Fleet, Galloway in 1895 was the son of the headmaster of Girthon School.
